Erick’s passion for aviation started early.
Growing up in central Nevada. He spent his early days watching Navy F-14s and F-18s launch out of NAS Fallon, chasing each other across the desert sky. But it wasn’t until his Father purchased a ‘46 Ercoupe and they flew it home from northern Oregon that the realization of his path became clear. In 2018 while in the process of getting out of the Army, Erick’s wife, Laney, found out he could go to flight school on the GI Bill. With a gentle push he was off. Then in 2023 with a Commercial certificate and no flying job to to be found he started working at Professional Aircraft Services putting his maintenance skills to the test, learning a new trade as a aviation maintenance tech. Now, as a CFI based in Northern Colorado, he’s putting it all together. Offering flight training with a unique prospective and ferry flights with the reliability of a pilot that truly knows how an airplane, and its systems, works.

I recently used Erick Topken's pilot services for a challenging mission profile of ferrying a small single engine trainer from a remote island in Washington State to Southern Illinois.
This involved long VFR stage routes over vast empty territory over high terrain and high density altitudes with large smokey areas from wildfires. Erick was on schedule and able to safely assess the conditions and effectively perform the flight on the agreed terms. I am very satisfied with the services Erick performed and would highly recommend him.

“An outstanding CFI with exceptional aircraft systems knowledge and a talent for making complex concepts easy to grasp. Their calm, structured guidance during an unplanned night diversion transformed a high-stress situation into a safe and memorable learning opportunity. They also excel at teaching stall recovery techniques and instilling confidence while emphasizing safe operation within the aircraft's limitations. Highly recommended.”

I flew with Erick wile preparing to take the Commercial Pilot Check Ride. He was able to help me build the skills to nail short field landings and power off 180s, and confidence in stronger cross wind landings.
